<Lanthanum Oxide Based Coating
Lanthanum oxide coatings with some other compositions have features of good conductive and corrosion-resistant . The material is usually used in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems. The composition depends on operating condition of systems.    
(1) Lanthanum strontium cobalt ferrite (LSCF), which is called lanthanum strontium cobaltite ferrite, is a ceramic material of the ferrite group. It is a distorted hexagonal perovskite structure and black in color. It is a phase containing lanthanum(III) oxide, strontium oxide, cobalt oxide and iron oxide (or cobalt iron oxide). LSCF materials are usually used as cathodes in intermediate temperature SOFC applications and oxygen permeable membranes which separate oxygen from air. Typical applications of LSCF are cathode layers in SOFC (solid oxide fuel cells) system and oxygen permeable membranes in gas separators.
(2) Lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) is an oxide ceramic material with the general formula La1-xSrxMnO3, where x describes the doping level. It has a perovskite-based crystal structure. For the general form ABO3, 'A' sites are usually occupied by lanthanum(La) and strontium(Sr) atoms, and the 'B' sites are occupied by manganese(Mn) atoms. In other words, the material consists of lanthanum manganite and some of the lanthanum atoms are doped with strontium(Sr) atoms. LSM can also be considered as lanthanum manganite (LaMnO3) alloyed with strontium manganite (SrMnO3). LSM is generally used in Solid Oxide Fuel cells with YSZ electrolyte. This cathode material is also used as an evaporation barrier to avoid cathode poisoning in chromite-rich interconnects(or bipolar plate). Its coefficient of thermal expansion is similar to YSZ electrolyte and has good electrochemical performance above 800°C, which is a operating temperature of some SOFC systems. Besides the typical uses of protective coating to limit the chromia evaporation from chromite-rich interconnects in SOFC, LSM can also be considered as a good catalysts and gas sensors.
