＜Erosion-corrosion Wear Resistant Coating＞
Erosion occurs when solid particles impinge or impact on a surface and then result to material removal. Erosive wear is characterized by the angle of impact, the size of the particles and the physical characteristics of the debris. Temperature and other environmental conditions are critical factors of wear.
Thermal spray coatings are widely used to resist erosive wear. For instance, stainless-steel steam turbine blades are capable to operate at the temperatures up to 540°C (1000°F). However, the cost to replace these worn blades is significant and uneconomic, so the coating with proprietary material is developed. In the pulp and paper industry, erosion at high temperature is also a problem. In this kind of environment, boiler tubes are subjected to high temperature sulfidation and erosion. The issues lead to metal wastage of the tubes. In order to solve this problem, nickel-based alloys with high chromium have been developed.
In some aggressive environments such as oil and gas, aerospace and power generating industries, the CrC-NiCr series coatings are used because of their characteristics of wear resistance and in high temperature. The CrC-NiCr coatings is resistant to corrosive environments at operating temperatures up to 800 to 900℃. However, WC-Co system coatings have higher hardness than CrC-NiCr. If some Cr content was added in the WC-Co system, the coating perform a good resistance to corrosion in high temperature but low erosive conditions.
