TNC (Threaded Neill-Concelman) connectors are a threaded version of BNC connectors. The interface specification for TNC and many other connectors is referenced in US Military Standard MIL-STD-348. The connector has a 50 ohm impedance and operates best in the 0-11 GHz spectrum. It has better performance than BNC connectors at microwave frequencies.
Most TNC connectors are the 50 ohm type even for use with other impedance coaxial cables, but there are also 75 ohm series available that provide a good SWR around 1 GHz. These can be identified by the reduced amount of dielectric at the mating end.
Reverse Polarity TNC (RP-TNC) connectors have been widely used by Wi-Fi device manufacturers to comply with specific local regulations, such as those from the FCC, designed to prevent consumer connections from exhibiting gain and thus violating compliance antenna. The FCC finds the RP-TNC acceptable in preventing consumers from replacing the antenna.
